Muskoka’s Adrenaline Adventure in the Winter

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

c428de6f3d5bd17 Muskokas Adrenaline Adventure in the WinterPaintball biathlon piquing interest across Muskoka   PAINTBALL BIATHLON. Visitors at Santa’s Village in December had a chance to try their hand at paintball biathlon, an emerging sport that has already garnered interest in the Muskoka region. Submitted photo BRACEBRIDGE – Spurred by a trial run at Santa’s Village, the owner of a local paintball club is hoping to bring the emerging sport of the paintball biathlon into Muskoka. Back Country Paintball owner Tony Armstrong said the sport, which replaces the rifles of traditional biathlons with paintball guns, has the potential to grow into a popular winter activity for both youth and Muskoka’s winter tourism industry. To test the waters for the sport, Armstrong launched a promotional event at the Santa’s Village Santafest event in late December, where over 100 visitors had the chance to test their marksmanship skills. “We’re just kind of dabbling with it to see how it’s going to work out,” he said. “We’re still sort of at the starting level and we’re still trying to grow it … I’m hoping to hook up with a Nordic skiing facility, which will say ‘we do skiing, you do shooting, we should combine and do an event.’” Although there wasn’t enough snow during Santafest to facilitate a skiing experience, Armstrong said the sport has already garnered interest among some in the community. So far, he said a few Nordic skiing groups, a teacher at Huntsville High School and a local cadet corps have indicated interest in growing the sport. “The skill is in getting your heart rate up to speed, then slowing down so you can shoot, and then getting it back up to speed again,” he said. “There’s quite a bit of skill involved.” Armstrong said he was inspired to test the sport in Muskoka after seeing YouTube videos of paintball biathlon events in the United States. “It just got me so excited that I wanted to go cross-country skiing again, and I haven’t skied in years,” he said. Compared to traditional biathlons, Armstrong says paintball biathlons have lower start-up costs and involve much less red tape for participants, making them more accessible to a wider range of age groups and potential consumers. “I did talk to a couple of fellows in Parry Sound who said to get into (traditional biathlons) it’s quite expensive — the guns are thousands of dollars and you have to get a special licence to carry them,” he said. Armstrong is also hoping local tourism groups will take notice of the sport’s potential, which he says “fits perfectly” into recent efforts to market Muskoka as a year-round tourism destination. “I’d like to make paintball more of a year-round sport,” he said. “It’s just another opportunity for the youth in our community to be involved in another sport.”

This is meant to familiarize the General with all controls. The first mission occurs toward 10 am on April 30th 2011, as part of the airborne operations which began the invasion of Rock Hill. Fleecy is inserted outside the town of Showdown Creek as a pathfinder to lay a drop zone beacon for other ballers. The ballers will be scattered in Showdown creek, leaving Fleecy in a mixed unit formed from various companies. This mixed unit will clear nearby bunkers of paintballers. These opposing ballers led by Aaron Danger Zone Armstrong , who will lead his troops from Snipers Alley through the smoke to defend all bunkers as needed. Danger Zones mission will be to form a full assault on Fleecy and his unit. There will also a rescue of two British officers General Lunchbox and Major Guy. 10 Tips to a Great Paintball Bachelor Party in Muskoka

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Paintball Bachelor parties or Stag parties are becoming very popular.  The bachelor party symbolizes the last weekend of freedom as an unmarried guy. Do things that you won’t be able to do as easily once you are married. The cost of paintball for a bachelor party can be less than $80 per person and it is lots of fun and will give you lots to talk about. The guys will love it.

Here are few tips on how to organize a great stag party for your Groom.

1. Invite more than 15 people – the best games are played with 12-20 players. Some of the guys will always drop out or not be able to make your date so invite lots of guys to make sure on the day that there is enough to make a fun day.

2. Let the groom know what is up – Paintball is best when everyone knows what is up so they are dressed for the occasion and the anticipation of the coming day part of the fun. He will also help with a date that works.

3. Pick a day 1-4 weeks ahead of the wedding – Paintball in Muskoka is an event that is stand alone there are lots of reasons why it should not be held the same weekend as the wedding you will be dirty and and have a few welts that will not look good in pictures.  A good idea is for the bride and groom to have their bachelor/bachelorette parties on the same weekend so neither is home worrying what the other is doing.

4. Don’t go drinking before the event – paintball is a sport that must be played sober, it is probably the most fun you can ever have running through the woods or fields takes all of your concentration and insurance regulations prohibits the field owner into not allowing players on the field that are drunk. Save the embarrassment and and the thirst till after wards, there will be lots of reasons to have a few beers after your time at the field

5. Arrange for a social hour after wards over a few beers – playing paintball is a fast paced adrenaline pumping fun game and the guys will have lots of stories to talk about  so going for a beers and meal after wards is really part of the fun of paintball. There is a good selection of establishments in Muskoka to choose from

6. Bring a change of clothes – you will get dirty you will get shot you will get even. this is paintball slogan I saw once at field and it is true. But you will also be  sweaty so change of clothes will be nice before you head out.

7. Get the guys to prepay or pool your money ahead of time – one way to get everyone to the paintball park on time is to get them to prepay. They are less likely to back out, and there does’t need to be any discussions of money in front of the groom. everyone should pitch in to cover the cost of the grooms day as well. Your paintball field can help with this by setting a package rate so you will know what your costs are before the event.

8. Prepare to have the most fun you have fun you can have – paintball is like it was made for bachelor parties and Muskoka was made for paintball everyone has fun, there will be a few welts to show off you can act like a the kid  and you can kill something for fun.

9. Get a costume for the groom – To add some fun go by the a thrift store or dollar store and pick up a fun costume for the groom to wear bright colours, stripper costume, ball and chain anything to make him stand out

10. Remeber to invite the Dads, coworkers, friends etc. – The more the merrier everyone wants to play and be there for the groom so don’t miss anyone it is great way to meet everyone in the grooms life and he will have that much more fun as well

Following these tips will help to make the day one to be remembered by everyone and stress free for you.

Have fun and enjoy a great day.

What is a Muskoka Paintball Big Game

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Starting at the very basics; Paintball is a game where two teams or individuals compete for an objective while avoiding being hit

or “marked” by paint shot from an air powered paintball gun or “paintball marker”. Paintballs are actually a mix of gelatine and

food colouring, non-toxic and biodegradable. Paintball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is played

everywhere from backyards to professional international leagues.

“Woodsball” goes back to the roots of paintball with participants playing recreationally in wooded fields in a variety of games

like capture the flag or attack and defend. Muskoka with its varied terrain is one of teh best places in the world to play

paintball.

Players are divided evenly into two teams a mix of young and old and a various skill levels and identified with armbands. A

safety and rules briefing precedes the game and explains game details like special units (medics, rocketeers, spys, etc.).

Each team also has a General and several Sargeants who will receive missions and intel from the Game Director  to lead

players into battle. Players that do get hit return to their base and check in with the ref there to be re-inserted into the game.

Game play begins at 10am sharp. The horn blows and two armies race towards each other. Both teams will battle until 3pm to

control vital positions on the field and to complete missions from their General which are worth points for their team. Sabotage

attacks, and hidden secrets weapons are all part of the game. At the end of the day, victory goes to the team that works

together and emerges with the most overall points.

Tips for Spring Paintball Marker Maintenance

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Its spring at Muskoka Paintball and time to tune up your gear for the coming season. Here are some tips to follow so you can hit the ground running this paintball season and have your marker clean and ready when the first paint flies.

You can pour as much money as you want into your marker, but without proper care it will not work at all. To keep your gun running at its’ finest follow the tips below.
1.Read the owners manual for your paintball marker. It will tell you what paintball marker maintenance has to be done regularly, and how often it has to be done.

2.Before disassembling your paintball gun insure that the guns safety is on

3. Next remove the hopper and all paintballs, twist off the air tank and make sure the bolt is in a forward resting position (even when the tank is removed the gun will still hold air, shoot it out carefully).

4.Use warm water and a soft cloth to clean the outside part of the barrel, and dry it with a towel. Clean the inside part of the gun’s main body by running a squeegee through the entire body and scrubing with a soft cloth. Use toothbrushes, cotton swabs and cotton balls to clean in tight crevices. Use a small or medium-bristle brush to clean all the dirt, debris and broken paint out of the grip-frame. Clean the bolt, striker and hammer with warm water and a soft cloth. Completely dry all the pieces. Carefully examine the o-rings for cracks, this is where air leaks most often occur. Replace cracked o-rings, and check the other internal parts for replacement or repair.

5.While cleaning watch out for foreign objects that interfere with your guns performance and be sure to clean away any foreign material like old dried paint or dirt and grit. Leaving the gun globbed with paint will likely prevent it from shooting and greatly decrease its life span.

6.Begin cleaning the gun at the barrel. pull a squeegee through the barrel to get it clean.

7.Check the detents, look for worn O-rings and broken or missing springs

8.Watch out for your pins and screws, losing one of those can put a damper on a good paintball day.

9. before reasembling place a drop of certified paintball gun lubricant on each moving seal. (on the bolt, rammer, etc.)

The most important thing to remember while caring for your gun is to keep it clean and oiled. Firearm lubricants cannot be used as they can quickly ruin internal seals. So always use the lube that came with the marker or come by the shop and purchase paintball marker lube.

At Back Country Paintball we have just orderd in a fresh supply of lube, and O rings and have a good supply of bolts and parts needed to maintain and upgrade your marker for the season.

Brandon and Aaron are also ready to help you or to take proffessional care of your marker to make sure it is ready to go when the snow is gone. So come over to the pro shop and see the boys.

Paintball in Muskoka - How Back Country Paintball began.

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

And so blogging began at Back Country Paintball.

In this blog I will try to answer as many questions about paintball as I can. There are so many good things about paintball that I am having trouble getting started.
In 2006 my sons Aaron and Brandon purchased paintball markers and started playing in the back yard. They were always after me to play. “Two is no good, we need more people”. Well, after a summer of playing we finally found a field to play at in Baysville. Muskoka paintball run by Jamie Armstrong and some friends.

Aaron had to work so Brandon and I went, he was 13 at the time.
Well I had so much fun and Jamie and his friends were so helpful I could not resist. Why is there no field in Bracebridge? Jamie lived in Bracebridge, But he did not have any property. Well I do have property I have 16 acres less than a kilometre from town.
Thats where we started, Jamie, Kyle, Jay and Spencer helped us all winter to get ready we had to get zoning change we had to get some fields built get some rental markers and gear and clean out the garage for a shop.
All was going smooth, until Aaron and his buddy Jake Kay went to Wasaga Paintball to play Frostys Revenge. It was a rainy snowy day in March. I could not believe my eyes when we got there. There were 500 people there, all ages from lots of places. The boys had a great time.
I decided then and there we are going to build a field so people will come to play paintball in Muskoka.
At our zoning hearing Kyle Wilson came with me as an expert. We were opposed by one family who said that paintball encouraged aggressive and destructive behaviour in youth. Well Kyle almost came unglued. that is not the case at all. I talked to the council, I have been a Sunday school teacher, a hockey coach, soccer coach and scout leader for many years.
There is now way I would invite such behaviour in fact we have found it to be so much the opposite since that day.
So this is how family fun started the Back Country Paintball family. I intend to help anyone who will read or listen to this blog the inside scoop on paintball as I see it. I believe it is one of the best things that has happened to Bracebridge and it is definitely the best thing that has happened to our family.  I hope I can show you how it can be family fun and important to you as well.
