Visitors at Santa’s Village in December had a chance to try their hand at paintball biathlon, an emerging sport that has already garnered interest in the Muskoka region. Submitted photo BRACEBRIDGE – Spurred by a trial run at Santa’s Village, the owner of a local paintball club is hoping to bring the emerging sport of the paintball biathlon into Muskoka. Back Country Paintball owner Tony Armstrong said the sport, which replaces the rifles of traditional biathlons with paintball guns, has the potential to grow into a popular winter activity for both youth and Muskoka’s winter tourism industry. To test the waters for the sport, Armstrong launched a promotional event at the Santa’s Village Santafest event in late December, where over 100 visitors had the chance to test their marksmanship skills. “We’re just kind of dabbling with it to see how it’s going to work out,” he said. “We’re still sort of at the starting level and we’re still trying to grow it … I’m hoping to hook up with a Nordic skiing facility, which will say ‘we do skiing, you do shooting, we should combine and do an event.’” Although there wasn’t enough snow during Santafest to facilitate a skiing experience, Armstrong said the sport has already garnered interest among some in the community. So far, he said a few Nordic skiing groups, a teacher at Huntsville High School and a local cadet corps have indicated interest in growing the sport. “The skill is in getting your heart rate up to speed, then slowing down so you can shoot, and then getting it back up to speed again,” he said. “There’s quite a bit of skill involved.” Armstrong said he was inspired to test the sport in Muskoka after seeing YouTube videos of paintball biathlon events in the United States. “It just got me so excited that I wanted to go cross-country skiing again, and I haven’t skied in years,” he said. Compared to traditional biathlons, Armstrong says paintball biathlons have lower start-up costs and involve much less red tape for participants, making them more accessible to a wider range of age groups and potential consumers. “I did talk to a couple of fellows in Parry Sound who said to get into (traditional biathlons) it’s quite expensive — the guns are thousands of dollars and you have to get a special licence to carry them,” he said. Armstrong is also hoping local tourism groups will take notice of the sport’s potential, which he says “fits perfectly” into recent efforts to market Muskoka as a year-round tourism destination. “I’d like to make paintball more of a year-round sport,” he said. “It’s just another opportunity for the youth in our community to be involved in another sport.”

This is it, Young Gunz starts this week April 14^th after school.

We have had a long winter and are anxious to get playing paintball outdoors again.  There will be some changes at the field this year.

To start I have become a social media guru… well not really, but I am trying. We are also updating the web page http://www.backcountrypaintball.com/ it should be all new by the end of this week.

BACK COUNTRY BOOT CAMP is on April 30^th for those of you who played at Muskoka Mayhem this game will be fun don’t miss out there will be some cool prizes and a spot to sell your old gear or maybe upgrade to some new stuff for the year.

One more new thing that we will be posting on the facebook page is CHEAP DAYS. We will be hosting one on the last Sunday of each month through the season. It will be open to all ages and costs will be the same as on Young Gunz nights. Only $25 per bag of 500. This day is for all of you guys that are too old for young gunz and want a chance to play where it is a little cheaper.

Prices this year will be relatively the same except that we have to do the HST different this year so all prices that we display do not include tax.

The 2011 spring campaign BACK COUNTRY BOOT CAMP begins with General Fleecy, member of the 506th Muskoka Mercenaries Regiment, training at Back Country Paintball in Bracebridge Ontario on 29 April 2011. This is meant to familiarize the General with all controls. The first mission occurs toward 10 am on April 30^th 2011, as part of the airborne operations which began the invasion of Rock Hill. Fleecy is inserted outside the town of Showdown Creek as a pathfinder to lay a drop zone beacon for other ballers. The ballers will be scattered in Showdown creek, leaving Fleecy in a mixed unit formed from various companies. This mixed unit will clear nearby bunkers of paintballers. These opposing ballers led by Aaron Danger Zone Armstrong , who will lead his troops from Snipers Alley through the smoke to defend all bunkers as needed. Danger Zones mission will be to form a full assault on Fleecy and his unit. There will also a rescue of two British officers General Lunchbox and Major Guy. These two commanders were lost in the Mayhem in Muskoka in October of 2010. Through the day challenges will be handed out objectives met and rescues performed. Be there to take on the challenge.

Who will you fight with? Be there to support your General to get your share in this scenario match?

Come to on April 30th to claim your stake in this Second Big Game to be held at your paintball field. All other forces must be taken on, all other activities must not over shadow this monumental day. You must be there – don’t let your general down. Fight along side the best security forces in Muskoka. Take the call – will it be Fleecy leading your team or will “Danger Zone” lead you into battle to secure the Campaign?

TO BACK COUNTRY BOOT CAMP 2011!!

Paintball Bachelor parties or Stag parties are becoming very popular.  The bachelor party symbolizes the last weekend of freedom as an unmarried guy. Do things that you won’t be able to do as easily once you are married. The cost of paintball for a bachelor party can be less than $80 per person and it is lots of fun and will give you lots to talk about. The guys will love it.

Here are few tips on how to organize a great stag party for your Groom.

1. Invite more than 15 people – the best games are played with 12-20 players. Some of the guys will always drop out or not be able to make your date so invite lots of guys to make sure on the day that there is enough to make a fun day.

2. Let the groom know what is up – Paintball is best when everyone knows what is up so they are dressed for the occasion and the anticipation of the coming day part of the fun. He will also help with a date that works.

3. Pick a day 1-4 weeks ahead of the wedding – Paintball in Muskoka is an event that is stand alone there are lots of reasons why it should not be held the same weekend as the wedding you will be dirty and and have a few welts that will not look good in pictures.  A good idea is for the bride and groom to have their bachelor/bachelorette parties on the same weekend so neither is home worrying what the other is doing.

4. Don’t go drinking before the event – paintball is a sport that must be played sober, it is probably the most fun you can ever have running through the woods or fields takes all of your concentration and insurance regulations prohibits the field owner into not allowing players on the field that are drunk. Save the embarrassment and and the thirst till after wards, there will be lots of reasons to have a few beers after your time at the field

5. Arrange for a social hour after wards over a few beers – playing paintball is a fast paced adrenaline pumping fun game and the guys will have lots of stories to talk about  so going for a beers and meal after wards is really part of the fun of paintball. There is a good selection of establishments in Muskoka to choose from  

6. Bring a change of clothes – you will get dirty you will get shot you will get even. this is paintball slogan I saw once at field and it is true. But you will also be  sweaty so change of clothes will be nice before you head out. 

7. Get the guys to prepay or pool your money ahead of time – one way to get everyone to the paintball park on time is to get them to prepay. They are less likely to back out, and there does’t need to be any discussions of money in front of the groom. everyone should pitch in to cover the cost of the grooms day as well. Your paintball field can help with this by setting a package rate so you will know what your costs are before the event.

8. Prepare to have the most fun you have fun you can have – paintball is like it was made for bachelor parties and Muskoka was made for paintball everyone has fun, there will be a few welts to show off you can act like a the kid  and you can kill something for fun.

9. Get a costume for the groom – To add some fun go by the a thrift store or dollar store and pick up a fun costume for the groom to wear bright colours, stripper costume, ball and chain anything to make him stand out

10. Remeber to invite the Dads, coworkers, friends etc. – The more the merrier everyone wants to play and be there for the groom so don’t miss anyone it is great way to meet everyone in the grooms life and he will have that much more fun as well

Following these tips will help to make the day one to be remembered by everyone and stress free for you.
